Cracked windshield forces Boston-bound plane to make emergency landing

An American Airlines flight heading to Boston from Miami made an emergency landing in Orlando overnight due to a cracked windshield.

An American Airlines spokesperson said the pilot noticed the cracked windshield shortly after takeoff, NECN reported. Though this type of issue is rare, reps for the airline say there was no immediate danger because the window was double paned.

However, the accident still required an emergency landing in Orlando. There were 150 passengers and six crewmembers aboard the plane.

NECN meteorologist Tim Kelley was aboard the flight, and chronicled the landing via social media.

Kelley added further details on his personal blog, stating that the pilot came over the intercom during the flight and announced that he “has 30 years of experience, and there is a procedure we must follow … our windshield has pretty much disintegrated … we will be landing in Orlando in a few minutes.”

Around 2:30 a.m. the passengers and crew finally arrived in Boston.

“The rest of the night went smoothly,” Kelley wrote. “We arrived in Boston at 2:30 am and passengers applauded our pilots as we pulled into the gate at Logan airport.”
