President Obama will nominate Brigham and Women’s Hospital attending physician and Harvard Medical School instructor Dr. Vivek Hallegere Murthy to become the nation’s 19th surgeon general, it was announced Thursday.

White House spokesman Jay Carney announced in a statement on Thursday that Murthy, 36, “will be a powerful messenger” on health policy, the New York Times reports. His nomination is subject to Senate approval.

Murthy is a founder of Doctors for America, a grassroots organization that works to improve the health of the nation and to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, high quality health care.

The organization’s executive director released a statement on Thursday, citing Murthy’s “tremendous dedication” to helping Americans find affordable health care.

“He has a tremendous dedication and commitment to improving the lives and health of Americans. He has been a tireless leader in bringing together 16,000 doctors and medical students from all 50 states for the common cause of improving the health of the nation. He brings two decades of experience as a champion in improving health, building coalitions, and bringing diverse people together to bring better health to communities. We are confident Dr. Murthy will be an extraordinary leader for the nation and for improving the health of all Americans as surgeon general,” the statement reads.

In 2011, Murthy was appointed by the White House to serve on the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health.

Murthy graduated from Yale Medical School and received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard in biochemical sciences. He also has an MBA from Yale.
