Bostonians hoping to light up in city parks will have to puff elsewhere.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously on Monday to adopt a proposed smoking ban for all City of Boston park properties. Initially proposed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the ban was approved on Nov. 20 by members of the Boston City Council.

The amendment to City of Boston Municipal Code, Ordinance 7-4.14, isn’t just for cigarettes. It prohibits the smoking of tobacco, marijuana or any other material including vaporized substances on 251 properties controlled by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, according to a release.

“This amendment is necessary to maintain the health and safety of our public parks and ensure that these valuable resources can be enjoyed by all Boston residents,”  Mayor Menino said in a release.

Those who challenge the new rule are in for a fine of $250. The Boston Police Department and Boston Park Rangers will be handing out fines for those caught smoking in city parks.

While the ban goes into effect immediately; the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, Boston Police Department and Boston Public Health Commission hope to educate the public about the ban.
