The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has created a scholarship fund in honor of Officer Sean Collier, who was killed during the shootout with Boston Marathon bombers Dzokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The fund will pay the way through Lowell Police Academy for one aspiring officer, who will also wear MIT’s Patch in Officer Sean Collier’s memory.

In a statement last summer, the MIT Police Department declared their love and appreciation of Collier.

“Shortly after the shootout that took his life, 2013 the MIT Police lost a brother and a friend, In order to honor him in the best way they know how they set up a scholarship fund that would send one self-sponsored recruit (MIT Self Sponsor) through the Lowell Police Academy (LPA) annually (the Scholarship) as a student officer,” the department said.

The scholarship will be inaugurated on June 2, 2014, MIT added.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Somerville Board of Aldermen and Chief of Police Thomas Pasquarello formally inducted Officer Collier into the Somerville Police Department back in August.

Collier was found shot in his vehicle in the area of Vassar and Main streets in Cambridge following the Boston Marathon bombings.
