Transit Police on Wednesday said they arrested a man they say masturbated while aboard an MBTA commuter rail earlier this month.

Adam Morrissey, 19 of Salem is accused of committing the lewd act while on an inbound commuter rail train from Rockport Station around 8 p.m. on Jan 18. He faces a charge of open and gross lewdness, and was due to be arraigned sometime Wednesday in Salem District Court.

A passenger captured a photograph of Morrissey after the alleged act, and Transit Police released it to the public.

The photograph, above, shows a man wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, a flat brimmed baseball hat and carrying a dark purple backpack.

The MBTA expressed today thanked people who contacted officers with tips which led to the identification and arrest of Morrisey.

“This is yet another example which proves when law enforcement and the public work together individuals such as Morrissey are held accountable for their criminal conduct,” Transit Police said in a statement.

Transit Police have reported similar crimes in recent months. Last week, a Quincy man was arrested for allegedly masturbating on a Red Line train.

The MBTA has urged passengers to speak up if they witness or experience sexually inappropriate activity on the T.

Last year, Metro spoke to a local psychologist about sexual harassment and exhibitionism on the T. Part of the report included tips from Hollaback! Boston on how to handle the inappropriate and potentially dangerous situations.
