In keeping with a true sense of sportsmanship, local winter Olympian Meghan Duggan has a surefire method to keep her teammates skating straight to the goal, and towards the gold: “lead by example.”

“My entire career as an athlete I’ve tried to take pride in doing that,” said the Danvers native, 26, who is heading up the United States Women’s Olympic hockey team as captain during the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

“You’ve got to talk the walk. You have to be committed 24/7, you can’t take days off. You have to make sure you’re giving 110 percent,” she said.

It will be Duggan’s second Winter Olympics – she played in the 2010 Games in Vancouver, helping her team grab the silver medal.

In the frenzy before leaving for Sochi, Duggan took some time to speak to national journalists about her team, her inspiration, and her ambition to take home the gold.

“Gold has been on our minds since day one. When you come up short it doesn’t feel good,” she said.

Of Boston, Duggan said the city has been “incredible to me my entire life.”

“I’m proud to call it home. For the past six months I’ve had the honor of training in the Boston-area. It’s been amazing for us; a perfect training area,” said Duggan.

“I’m proud to be from here, but I’d like to think that Boston would be proud of any of the Oympians that comes from here.”
