‘Food Cures’ from Joy Bauer
Today I joined an assortment of health journalists and bloggers to fete the newly revised and updated edition of Joy Bauer’s Food Cures, the nutritionist’s tome that teaches how eating the right foods can make a big impact on your health, whether you want glowing skin, lowered cholesterol, an improved mood — or maybe all three! We feasted on a delicious lunch packed with nutrition; and during each course, Bauer explained why she chose the ingredients she did. The facts were eye-opening, and I thought I’d share some of them with you here.
Did you know:
Pomegranates are chock-full of antioxidants that fight skin cancer.
Hitting happy hour is fine, as long as you don’t go overboard. For women, the ideal amount is up to one drink a day; for men, it’s up to two.
A slimming adult beverage: one shot of vodka, club soda and a splash of (any!) fruit juice. It’s about 100 calories.
One red bell pepper has two times the vitamin C of an orange.
Cold-water, fatty fish like salmon and sardines are the best seafood sources for omega-3s.
When dining out, you should opt for wild salmon over the farm-raised kind. However, if only farm-raised is on the menu, go for that but don’t eat the skin (you’ll take in fewer toxins).
Arctic char has many of the same benefits of salmon, plus it boasts a low number of contaminants and a milder taste.
The impact of soy on fertility is not something to worry about, Bauer says.
Regular coffee drinkers are thought to be at a lower risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Eating after you’re full ups the pressure on your stomach, which increases your stomach acid and can trigger acid reflux.
