How to prepare when your kid takes medication

Your child’s medicine should be in its original container when you give it to his or her school.

If your kid takes medication, plan a time at the beginning of the school year to go over the following key details, says Olga Acosta Price, Ph.D., director of the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools. Sign any consent forms so school personnel can administer the dose if necessary.

Tell the nurse

What medication your child is on and the dosage. Show it to your kid so that he or she can read the warning labels and verify the name.

About any side effects, as well as potential signs that your child missed a dose

The contact info for the prescribing care provider

Whether it will be taken at school. Find out who will give the dose if the nurse is absent, and let that person know how long your kid will be on the medication. Provide it in its original container.

Tell the teacher

The conditions or symptoms the drug targets

About any potential side effects or reactions your child has had in the past

How your child would like to be reminded about going to the nurse if he or she will take the medication at school
