Refresh yourself with a trip to the dermatologist

When you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see, the first piece of practical advice NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Ariel Ostad has is, “Don’t be too hard on yourself. Too many people are too hard on themselves.” His second piece of advice? “Don’t be ashamed if you want to look better.” We live, he says, in a competitive environment, and there are plenty of nonsurgical procedures that can help you look better and feel refreshed. We talked to him about two hot new treatments.

“This exciting new procedure is a skin lifting [and] tightening procedure that uses ultrasound to penetrate deep into the skin to cause contractions,” he says. Dr. Ostad says Ultherapy is “remarkable” because it helps the doctor see layers of skin and penetrate deep enough to make a change. “In the past, we haven’t been able to penetrate the layer of tissue which is called the SMAS [Sub-Muscular Aponeurotic System], which is the layer that is right above the muscle used by surgeons to pull back the skin.” Ultherapy can be used almost anywhere: Dermatologists can tighten the neck and lift jowls to create a much smoother, defined jaw line. They can also raise eyebrows and improve hooding on the eyelids. “I’ve used it for patients post-pregnancy for the sagging skin, stretch marks and loose skin from multiple pregnancies. It’s remarkable what we can achieve.”

Fillers, notes Dr. Ostad, are nothing new. But now there are much better options available for the consumer. “The issue with past fillers is that they didn’t work with really fine lines around the upper lips and crow’s feet. We now have fillers — one that comes to mind is Belotero — that can target those lines without lumpiness or bumps. It does an amazing job in filling in those lines really nicely.”

Dermatology versus plastic surgery

“These are nonsurgical procedures that have little to no risks,” he says. “Plastic surgery can require a lot more downtime and can change the way you look, sometimes not for the better. These treatments are just modest improvements that won’t change your facial structure.”
