Today in Medicine: Obese drivers more likely to be killed in accidents

Obese or not, buckling up can save your life.

Topic of Study: Driver obesity and car crash fatalities

Location of study: U.S.
Study subjects: Data from 57,491 road traffic collisions
Results: New research published online in Emergency Medicine Journal found that obese drivers were more likely to die in a road traffic collision than those of normal weight. The risk of death increased for obese drivers and increased with the level of obesity.
Significance: Researchers were concerned that car design might be a factor against safety for obese people. They also noted the importance of proper seat belt safety.

Topic of Study: Spreading of triple-negative breast cancer

Location of study: U.S.
Study subjects: Clinical data
Results:
A Weill Cornell study published in the magazine Cancer Cell has
allegedly tracked the “molecular switch” that promotes aggressive
triple-negative breast cancer cells to metastasize throughout the body.
Researchers also claim to be able to trigger the switch, which may
successfully treat cancer cells in aggressive breast cancer.
Significance:
The study results may prove encouraging to the researchers in both
short-term treatment of metastasis triple-negative breast cancer and in
possible prevention of metastases long-term.

Topic of Study: Smartphone apps’ accuracy in detecting skin cancer

Location of study: U.S.
Study subjects: Various data
Results: A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association-Dermatology found that accuracy among four phone apps designed for detecting melanoma varied dramatically. At the top of the list, one app diagnosed cancerous moles correctly 98.1 percent of the time. At the bottom, one app detected melanoma only 6.8 percent of the time. The study did not release the names of the apps, but the winning app sent photos of questionable moles to doctors for a fee for $5 per spot.
Significance: Despite what sounds like promising results from one app, on average three incorrectly classified more than 30 percent of the melanomas. Concern is that patients using apps may misdiagnose and/or delay treatment.
