Cell phones could be banned from Hong Kong marathon after selfie epidemic causes course accidents

There are a lot of places to take a selfie: on the beach, in your bathroom, in your car, on a boat. A marathon course, though, might not be one of those places as multiple people were injured in accidents caused by runners stopping to snap photos of themselves during the Hong Kong marathon.

In a sea of 73,000 runners, it seems an unwritten rule to not simply come to a halt to take a photo mid-race, but according to the South China Morning Post, many participants ended up bruised and bloodied after colliding on the course with other runners trying to sneak in a selfie.

Now, race organizers are considering a cell phone ban to prevent further selfie pandemonium at the 2014 Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon this February.

“We want people to apply a little bit of common sense and discipline,” Benjamin Hung Pi-cheng of Standard Charter said. “At the end of the day we want this to be run safely.”

A search on Instagram for photos with the hashtag #HongKongMarathon turned up several selfies. Marathon chairman William Ko said organizers will launch an anti-selfie campaign via social media to deter people from snapping photos during the race, conceding that an outright ban of cell phones is likely not realistic, as reported by BetaBeat.
