Swedish entrepreneurs invent invisible bike helmet

Wearing a bike helmet is annoying. Bike helmets are a pain to carry around, they’re not very sexy and they can get sweaty or ruin your hair. But they can also save your life.

Industrial designers Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin decided to solve the problem when they began the design process for an invisible bike helmet in 2005; now, the helmet is here and it’s available for purchase in Europe.

The woman pictured above looks chic and has perfect hair — and she’s also wearing a helmet. You see the scarf around her neck? That’s the Hovding invisible helmet.

The way the Hovding works is that on impact, it expands into an airbag, saving your head and your neck. Cyclists can still move exactly the way they do when they’re cycling, and according to the Hovding website, “The airbag won’t inflate unless you’re in an accident.” Watch the video to see a demonstration:

Haupt and Alstin decided to improve upon the design of traditional bike helmets after Swedish law required children 15 and under to wear bike helmets — adults were concerned that they’d be included in the law one day, too. The duo said in their mission statement that they wanted to create a helmet adults would be happy to wear.

The helmets are only available in Europe for now, and they’re not cheap: They cost 399 euros each. But that seems like a small price to pay if it saves your life. The one catch? If it inflates during an accident, you won’t be able to use it again.
