Few clues surface in Mattapan murders

As the search for the killer or killers in Tuesday’s Mattapan massacre continued yesterday, so did the family’s search for answers.

“We want to know what happened,” said Jackie Daughtry, the cousin of the woman who was fatally shot. She and other people visited the site at Woolson Street yesterday where a memorial of balloons, candles, stuffed bears and toy motorcycles grew.

“I’m just very upset," she said. "It’s sad. They didn’t have to kill the baby."

The Globe reported from anonymous police sources that the quintuple shooting that left four dead, including a 2-year-old and his mother, was drug related. However, Police Commissioner Ed Davis said police are still determining a motive and many aspects of the murder, but tried to offer an explanation of possibly why the victims were found naked.

“It’s been used quite frankly in crimes of narcotics and in incidents of robberies,” he said.
Just around the corner from where the bodies of the victims were found officers stood guard in front of a Sutton Street home where police planned to execute a search warrant yesterday.

Davis said that a car matching the description of the gray or silver Ford Explorer was recovered, but police are not yet sure that is the exact car they are looking for. Davis visited the scene yesterday afternoon with Mayor Thomas Menino.

As police stood guard at the top of Sutton Street in front of the suspected home where the incident may have started, Davis and Menino visited with a few residents at the bottom of the street. Menino, and other city officials, told residents about city services available to them and urged community involvement.
