Evidence recovered, some progress made

With “important” evidence recovered from Tuesday morning’s quintuple shooting in Mattapan, police said they are optimistic with their progress. However, police officials would not say how close they were to making a possible arrest.

Police Commissioner Ed Davis said Thursday that a Ford SUV, which police were searching for, was found in Grove Hall about an hour after the shooting.

“It is in our custody and is being examined by evidence technicians,” Davis said.

Mayor Thomas Menino added that it was community tips that led to the recovery of guns Thursday morning. Earlier this week, Davis and Menino visited the Woolson Street neighborhood to urge community involvement and ask for help.

“The BPD is very grateful for the cooperation of the community,” said Elaine Driscoll, a department spokeswoman.

At Woolson Street, where some of the victims were found naked and fatally shot on the sidewalk, the memorial of candles, stuffed animals and photos grew. “RIP SIMS EYANNA & AMANI” was written in black spray paint on the sidewalk.

A poster with a photo of 2-year-old Amani Smith’s classmates and their hand prints was attached to a fence.

Just around the corner from the memorial, officers continued to stand guard outside 23 Sutton St. as investigators prepared a search warrant for the home where the incident may have started.
