Crack in giant tank forces aquarium to close for day
A crack in the 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank at the New England Aquarium forced the building to close today.
The crack was in one of three layers of windows on the top level of the four-story high salt water exhibit, a spokeswoman said.
The water level in the tank was lowered so crews could get a better look at the crack.
“There’s no damage to animals, humans, nothing,” said Jane Wolfson, the spokeswoman. “There’s no leakage.”
Emergency repairs were being conducted today and the aquarium was expected to reopen tomorrow.
Employees discovered the crack this morning as they were preparing to open.
The tank is so big, according to the aquarium’s website, that it was first built and then the rest of the aquarium was built around it.
