NY GOPers mull entry to 2012 fray

Two of New York’s biggest GOP heavyweights are flirting with entering the 2012 presidential race.

Former state GOP chairman William Powers is publicly pushing for Texas Gov. Rick Perry to pick Rudy Giuliani as his running mate.

The Republican presidential field has been floundering as voters seem nonplussed with the candidates. Having Giuliani on his ticket could help Perry bring in voters on the Eastern Seaboard, attracting residents in states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, explained Powers.

“He’d be the best No. 2 anybody in the world could pick,” Powers told the New York Post.

Meanwhile, former three-term New York governor George Pataki is reportedly considering running as a GOP presidential candidate. Pataki, who is pro-choice and pro-gay rights, is “deeply disappointed … on the debt issue and in the lack of serious solutions being offered by the current Republican field,” his spokesman David Catalfamo told media outlets yesterday.

“The governor is seriously considering getting into the race,” he said.
