Hurricane Irene could hinder Hub students’ move

Kayla Hinkley, 20, right, waits along Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton for her roommate to come by with a moving truck to help her move just a few blocks away.

If Hurricane Irene continues on its path toward the Bay State, it could keep thousands of students from moving into their new digs on Monday.

Boston University’s First Year Student Outreach Project, which brings in masses of freshman a week before classes begin, could get stalled, according to school officials.

“We are preparing in the event the hurricane affects the area,” said Colin Riley executive director of Media Relations at BU. “We are advising people not to travel in unsafe conditions.”

Riley said the university would assess the situation day by day until they know more about the storm and have not aborted the program’s start date.

Emerson students are also scheduled to move in Monday, but a school spokesperson said those  from out-of-state  might have to alter travel plans.

The school is sticking to its move-in date, but is advising those traveling on Sunday to “make other arrangements.”

By Sunday, the storm could be on top of much of New England, and Hub-dwellers should be prepared for possible power outages, heavy tree damage and fierce flooding, according to meteorologists.
