Heavy rains dampen North Shore’s day

Some North Shore communities were hit hard by heavy rains and flooding early this morning making a mess of the morning commute.

In Peabody, where some of the worst flooding was located, the city’s mayor declared a state of emergency. The district court was closed as were some major roadways.

As much as six inches of rain fell in a short amount of time causing flash flooding, according to weather reports.

News helicopters showed multiple cars trapped in water up to their doors on some roadways, but there have been no reports of anyone requiring a rescue.

MBTA bus routes that run through the city are experiencing 10 to 15 minute delays due to traffic, according to the T.

Route 128 southbound in the area of Andover Street was closed for a brief time this morning due to flooding.

The rain also delayed the opening of the Topsfield Fair, which will now open at noon.

Surrounding communities including Salem, Lynn and Beverly were also dealing with road closures due to flooding.

There have been no reports of injuries so far.
