Mother Nature’s trick-or-treat
More than half a million Bay State homes and businesses were without power yesterday after a weekend storm pounded the region with wind and snow.
Boston was spared the brunt of the storm and by Sunday morning the one inch of snow that coated the roadways, lawns and sidewalks had melted.
However, Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency Saturday. The resources made available through the declaration were needed most in western Massachusetts where close to two feet of snow fell in some communities.
While New Englanders are accustomed to some bizarre weather — it was above 80 degrees for multiple days just weeks ago — this snowstorm was one of the earliest to occur in recent memory.
And it certainly will not be the last, according to forecasts.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting more snow than usual this winter.
“Winter will be drier than normal, with near-normal temperatures but above-normal snowfall,” the Almanac predicted for the Boston region.

1 – Only an inch of snow was recorded at Logan Airport. Just north of Boston in Reading, 5 inches was recorded.
