Boston’s best and its worst

Boston is home to some of the smartest, most sports-crazed, Fourth of July-celebrating residents in the U.S.

But its residents are horrible at driving and hosting a good barbecue.

According to a new online survey conducted by Travel and Leisure Magazine, residents and visitors ranked the Hub in a multitude of categories, including shopping, affordability, cocktails and attractiveness.

Respondents were asked to rate 35 cities they live in or had visited using a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. Responses were collected and tabulated by magazine staff.

Despite grumblings from some of the MBTA’s regular users, Boston placed fifth among out-of-towners when it came to transportation services.

Residents’ opinions differed slightly putting Boston in the seventh slot for trains and buses.

Boston also topped the charts for smarts and sport fanatics, coming in third and second, respectively, according to visitors.

Residents put the Hub in second and first place for those same categories in the 2011 “America’s Favorite Cities” survey.

The survey showed Boston held 14 titles on top 10 lists for various superlatives.

Boston’s “friendliness” and driving abilities, however, were near the bottom of the list of 35 cities surveyed.
