‘Hopeful’ string of robberies is over

Police in Cambridge arrested two young men this week and are investigating whether they are responsible for a string of robberies that have occurred recently in the city.

Ralph Corgain, 18, of Roslindale and a juvenile male from Dorchester were charged with unarmed robbery after the latest incident Sunday night on Main Street.

A woman was walking about 11:45 p.m. when she was approached from behind by the men, thrown to the ground and robbed of her cell phone and purse, police said.

Cambridge and MIT police stopped the men shortly after the incident because they matched the description given by the woman and she identified them.

There have been about a half-dozen unarmed street robberies throughout the city over the past few weeks.

“Investigators are reviewing this incident closely to determine if there is a link to several unarmed street robberies where victims have been approached from behind, pushed to the ground and robbed of their belongings,” said Cambridge Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Ames. “We are hopeful these arrests will bring an end to this string of crimes.”

Separate and unrelated from the unarmed robberies, Cambridge Police are continuing to investigate a rash of armed street robberies.

Six people were victims of robberies in a 28-hour period late last month.
