Green Line Extension meeting in Somerville

Just a day after riders blew off steam at a public hearing to discuss potential service cuts and fare increases proposed by the MBTA, MassDOT is hosting a meeting in Somerville to talk about extending the Green Line.

According to MassDOT’s Green Line Extension Project Team, a corridor-wide public meeting will be held at the Somerville High School tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 18, to go over the general scope of the project’s Phase I initiative.

Dubbed the “Phase I Early Bridge & Demolition Contract Scope of Work,” which is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2012, the team will discuss the reconstruction and widening of the Harvard Street Rail Bridge in Medford, the Medford Street Rail Bridge in Somerville, and the demolition of an MBTA owned property at 21 Water St. in Cambridge.

At one point in time, long, long ago, the state projected opening the extension by December 31, 2011.

Of course, that didn’t happen.

According to the Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership, the project got pushed back to 2014.

Then 2015. And now, they’re saying it will be phased between 2016 and 2019.

If, and when, the project is complete, it would stretch Green Line services from a relocated Lechmere Station in East Cambridge to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford, according to the MBTA.
