Famous names on new list of unclaimed Mass. money

In a weakened economy, it is a wonder how anyone could miss money that they own.

But in just the past six months, the Massachusetts Treasury identified hundreds of thousands of people, charities and businesses that are owed more than $80 million in unclaimed property.

State Treasurer Steven Grossman’s office released this month a printable list of people that are owed more than $100.

“This new list is the tip of the iceberg. While it contains approximately 52,000 names, these are only a small portion of the individuals, businesses and charities that we have on record,” Grossman said in a statement. “We want to take every step possible to get unclaimed property back into the hands of its rightful owners.”

Fifteen accounts on the new list are worth more than $100,000, 49 are between $50,000 and $100,000 and 6,404 exceed $1,000.

The unclaimed property includes forgotten savings and checking accounts, un-cashed checks, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, dividends and contents of unattended safe deposit boxes, according to Grossman’s office.

Accounts are considered “unclaimed” and turned over to the state after three years of no activity. The Treasury releases an updated list every six months as new accounts are turned over.

Money for nothing

Some famous people,  including former Boston sports stars, are owed some money under the new list.

Kendrick Perkins, the former Celtics star who was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder last year, has more than $100 in unclaimed property.

Richard Seymour, who played for the Patriots for eight seasons, also has unclaimed property.
