What was WFNX’s last song?

It’s still unknown who will occupy 101.7 on the FM dial.

Boston’s beloved alternative station WFNX went off the air at 7 p.m. this evening to the sound of The Cure’s “Let’s Go to Bed.”

The last DJ to helm a 101.7 WFNX broadcast gave a brief goodbye this evening as the station signed off after 29 years.

DJ Neal Robert, who worked at the station during the 1980s and 90s, hosted the final hours of programming on 101.7 FM this afternoon. He said “Let’s Go to Bed” was also the first song played on WFNX.

“FNX has always been about the future and while the station is migrating off of the FM dial … FNX will continue online

Former DJs, news broadcasters and others who worked at WFNX over the years called in and appeared in studio for the station’s final day today. The station was a preset on many radio dials over the years as it became a go to spot to hear new bands and music that could not be head on the growing number of pop and Top 40 stations.

The station will continue online at WFNX.com. The future of 101.7 FM is uncertain, but as Metro reported today, it could be transformed into a Republican talk station or a Spanish language station.

WFNX songs can still be heard on the FM station for now, but the format has become automated. It was unclear when the format change would take place.

Phoenix Media/Communications Group sold the station earlier this year for more than $14 million to Clear Channel.
