Police investigating second rape near Harvard Yard
A woman reported being attacked and raped near Harvard Yard making it the second reported rape in that area in less than a week.
The most recent attack occurred just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, but the woman reported the incident to Somerville police on Friday. The Harvard University Police Department then put out an alert that same day.
The woman said she was attacked near Oxford and Kirkland streets.
That incident is a short distance from where the first attack occurred on Aug. 10, at about 3:15 a.m.
A woman reported that she was grabbed as she walked through the Johnston Gate. She was pulled behind Massachusetts Hall and attacked, police said.
Both women were not affiliated with the university.
University police said again that they have increased the presence of both uniformed and plainclothes officers in and around the Yard and surrounding campus.
“The Harvard University Police Department wants to remind students, faculty, and staff that we are located in an urban setting and share many of the crime and safety issues that exist in any city. Community members should be vigilant while walking throughout campus and surrounding areas,” university police said in their alert.
The suspect in the most recent attack was described as a white man in his mid-twenties, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin building and dark, spiky hair.
