Olympic champion and Needham native Aly Raisman had a scare when she fell during a performance in California for a national gymnastics tour.

Raisman fell while performing a release from the uneven bars Sunday in Ontario, Calif. for the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions.

A video of the incident shows Raisman on the higher of the two uneven bars. She let go at one point, apparently launched herself too far away from the bar and was unable to grab back on. She fell face first to the mat below, however her legs landed off of the mat.

The 18-year-old was examined at the arena by a physician. She suffered bruised knees, according to a statement from USA Gymnastics.

“She will follow an icing and additional treatment regimen with continued assessment by the medical staff, but does not require any further testing at this time,” the statement said.

“THANK YOU so much for all the kind words & support. I’m so thankful
that I am OK, just some bruising on my knees and the rest of my legs” Raisman posted on her Twitter account this afternoon.

Raisman is already in San Diego for the tour’s next performance on Thursday, according to WCVB.

Raisman wasn’t the only gymnast injured Sunday night.

Her fellow gold-medalist McKayla Maroney fell from the same uneven bars just moments before her own injury.

Maroney stumbled on her dismount and fell backward. Pictures of her being carried away from the performance made their way around the Internet today.

Today, Maroney was undergoing medical evaluations and tests to determine the extent of the injury to her left knee, the statement said.

Just before the show, Raisman tweeted “Ontario… Are you ready for us?”

This morning Maroney tweeted a picture of eggs, sausage and home fries.

“Not bad for hospital food,” she tweeted.

The 40-stop tour comes to Boston on Nov. 11. It will take place at the TD Garden.
