Boston’s Purple Shamrock bar ‘going out in style’
The Purple Shamrock on Union Street is set to close on Saturday, following 32 years of business, but Bostonians will be able to bid a final adieu with a “traditional Irish wake” Thursday.
The day of mourning kicks off at 12:30 p.m. with a funeral procession through Quincy Market, Faneuil Hall, and down Congress Street complete with a casket full of purple shamrocks, bag pipers and, of course, whiskey.
The casket will be laid at its “final resting place” inside the Purple Shamrock where organizers say food, music and stout will flow freely, “helping to drown the sorrows of patrons as they reminisce about the good days shared amongst friends.”
And details count – prayer cards will be distributed and a purple wake guestbook will be displayed at the door for guest to pay their respects and sign as they arrive.
Limited edition “Last Call” Purple Shamrock T-shirts will also be available for purchase.
“For 32 years the Purple Shamrock has brought people from all over together,” said Paul Wilson, Director of Operations at The Glynn Group. “While we are sad to see the Shamrock close on September 15, we are excited about some possibilities of a reincarnation in the future.”
On Saturday – roughly the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day – the bar will offer its last call. Green beer and live music will see The Shamrock to its end.
