Menino proclaims today “Run for Good” day in Boston

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and 2012 Olympic gold and bronze medalist DeeDee Trotter.

In recognition of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Mayor Thomas M. Menino took to Dewey Square today as some young teens work out with members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic track and field team, and name today as “Saucony Run for Good Day” in Boston.

Menino encouraged the youngsters to keep active to fight childhood obesity.

“You don’t have to be an Olympian to be in good health, folks. All you need is a little support and encouragement, and to make the right choices,” Menino said.

Saucony, a fitness footwear and apparel company, is appealing to Bosotn runners and walkers to download a free app – Saucony Run4Good – to join the Boston Moves for Health team and hit the roads.

After helping to lead students from Timilty Middle School of Roxbury in a jog and quick workout on Dewey Square, Olympian DeeDee Trotter offered some words of encouragement.

“Just a little over a month ago we were in London, finding our strong,” said Trotter, a 2012 Olympic gold and bronze medalist. “We were just out there racing around the track trying to show the world how great we really are and how hard we had worked to come to this point where we can bring home championship medals.”

“But more than anything it’s amazing to stand here with these (students) from Timilty Middle School. They are amazing. They came out today, they were so excited, and they have found their strong and they’re running for good right now. They’re trying to change what has been predicted to be their future,” Trotter said.
