Boston Salon Week: Beauty on a budget

With some high-end salons charging as much as $85 for a hair cut, and
$200 for highlights, it’s safe to say it’s not cheap for a girl to look
her best nowadays.

But this week, Boston-area beauty lovers will have a chance to spend half as much on services at 14 salons throughout the city.

Boston
Salon Week, which began Monday and runs until Sunday, comes on the
heels of its inaugural event in April 2011, which organizers say went
swimmingly.

“The feedback we’ve received from the industry has been
tremendous,” said Maria Lekkakos, president of Salon Week. “We’re
excited to see top salons and stylists working together for the good of
the industry and look forward to that continuing into the next event.”

Modeled
after Restaurant Week, organizers say the seven-day sale is meant to
show appreciation for their existing clients, bring back inactive
customers and gain new ones.

“We want to bring in new clients who
have wanted to try high end salons, but have been afraid to make the
commitment,” said Salon Week CEO Marc Harris. “We want young people who
are going to college to come in, and hopefully become our clients of the
future.”

But not all the participating salons will break the beauty bank.

“I
absolutely think people – all day long – will seek out value. Just
because you’re getting something at a very high price doesn’t mean that
it doesn’t exist at a lower price – it does,” Harris said.

For Peter Bradley, owner of the Back Bay salon Bradley & Diegel, signing on to the project has been a win-win.

“We
were one of the first salons to sign up with (Harris) and we had great
success with it,” Bradley said. “I liked the concept of being able to
focus attention on fashionable salons on Newbury Street, and reaching
consumers who otherwise wouldn’t come into the city.”

Since Monday, Bradley reports more customers coming in the door, and leaving with transformed tresses.

“We’ve
selected a good cross section – blow drys, treatments, hair cuts,
single process, highlights – so we’ve really tried to make most of our
services available. It has boosted clients 10 fold.”

Other local Boston beauty spots participating this week: Capri in Newton Highlands, Kent Newton Salon in Boston, Studio 9 in Boston, Marc Harris (all 3 Boston locations), Salon Eva Michelle in Boston, Enzo & Co. Salon in Boston, Hair Wash and Blowdry Bar in Boston, Sassoon Salon in Boston, I Soci Salon in Boston, Salon Invi in Andover.
