[UPDATE] Boston University student killed by MBTA bus identified

Boston Police have identified the cyclist who was hit and killed by an MBTA bus near the corner of Brighton and Harvard Avenues as 21-year-old Chung-Wei Yang.

A 58-year-old Route 57 MBTA bus driver has been taken out of service while police investigate the accident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver and passengers did not know anyone was struck at the time, which is why the bus did not stop after hitting Yang.

No charges have been filed against the driver, who has not been identified.

“The investigation into last night’s fatal collision near the corner of Brighton and Harvard avenues in Allston remains active this morning.  No charges have been brought and there are no updates at this time,” Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Jake Wark said Tuesday.

Yang was found laying on the ground with serious injuries before being taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was unclear whether he was wearing a helmet.

When asked about the driver, MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said, “He has been with the T six years and has a good record.”
