Catherine Greig, ‘Whitey’ Bulger’s girlfriend, appeals sentence

Catherine Greig

Claiming that the families of the alleged victims of her boyfriend should not have spoke during her sentencing, the longtime girlfriend of alleged mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger is appealing her federal prison sentence.

Catherine Greig, 61, was sentenced to nearly eight years in jail earlier this year after she pleaded guilty to harboring Bulger and other crimes.

Her appeal lawyer, Dana Curhan, filed a 48-page appeal brief in federal court Wednesdsay.

Of the multiple reasons Curhan said Greig deserved an appeal was that prosecutors failed to establish that Greig knew of the dozens of guns Bulger allegedly hid inside their Santa Moncia home while on the run. Greig’s sentence took the firearms into account.

He also said that the court allowed the family members of Bulger’s alleged victims to speak at Greig’s sentencing and should not have.

“Even disregarding the more inflammatory comments, none of the challenged statements addressed Greig’s background, character, and conduct. To the extent that the trial court considered such information in determining her sentence, it was an abuse of discretion to do so. Greig is entitled to a remand for resentencing,” Curhan wrote.

Greig is currently being held in a low-security prison in Minnesota and is scheduled for release in 2018, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
