Michelle Kosilek: Inmate’s sex change put on hold

Robert Kosilek, now known as Michelle, is seen in January 1993 while on trial for the 1990 murder of her wife.

A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the sex change he said the state
Department of Correction must provide to convicted wife killer Michelle
Kosilek must be put on hold while the state appeals the decision.

Chief Judge Mark Wolf ordered the stay of the surgery with the condition
of monthly reports on its progress.

He has expressed concerns about the
state moving forward in a timely manner to find a doctor and where the
surgery would take place.

Kosilek, who was born Robert, was convicted in 1990 of killing his wife
Cheryl in Mansfield. Kosilek sued the DOC for not providing her with a
sex change and claimed it violated her Eighth Amendment rights.

Earlier
this year Wolf issued a controversial ruling in which he sided with
Kosilek and said she suffered from a “mental illness” that must be
treated.
