mTicket: MBTA releases mobile ticketing app at South Station
It’s been about two weeks since the MBTA launched its mobile ticketing app at North Station, and with an overwhelmingly positive response, T officials say they are stoked to start offering the technology today to commuter rail customers who travel through South Station, as well as ferry riders.
“We are very excited. The south side is much bigger in terms of ridership , and I think we’ll start seeing real significant use,” said the MBTA’s Director of Innovation Joshua Robin.
Today the MBTA also started offering customers the opportunity to buy monthly passes on the app – and get a $10 discount.
For the past two weeks, customers were only able to buy single and ten-ride passes on their smartphones.
The monthly mobile piece will not include subway and bus rides, Robin said.
“Our plan all along was to roll out the app first with commuter rail and ferries – no integration,” Robin said.
T officials have said that it may be years before the app rolls out to the rest of the transit system.
An estimated 43,000 commuter rail customers travel through South Station on an average weekday, Robin said, compared to about 26,000 at North Station.
Robin said that as of this morning, there were 13,463 downloads since the app launched at North Station on November 12.
Here are the latest stats on the mobile ticketing app as of Tuesday morning:
1. Total dollar value of transactions $53,780
2. Total number of transactions 3,666
3. Number of individual purchasers 2,089
4. Transactions per individual 1.75 transactions/person
5. 756 with more than one transaction – 36.2%
6. Average spent per user $25.74 – the average transaction is $14.67
7. Total downloads – 13,463
