(UPDATE) Teen arrested for bringing gun and bullets to Dorchester school

Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested today at the Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester for allegedly having a gun and “several rounds of ammunition” in his school bag, according to Boston Police.

The student, who was not identified, was arraigned today on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and the unlawful possession of ammunition, and was held on $1,000 cash bail, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Spokesman Jake Wark.

If he posts that amount, he must remain at home and wear a GPS tracking device, Wark said.

The suspect was arrested around 8:30 a.m. after Roxbury police responded to a call for a firearm found on a male student at the school, which is located on Washington Street.

“On arrival, officers spoke to members of the Boston School Police who stated  an unloaded firearm was found on a student during an administrative search relative to a stolen cell phone,” Boston Police said in a statement. “The unloaded firearm was found in the student’s school bag. Additionally, a search of the student enabled officers to see and seize several rounds of ammunition.”

Police did not say whether the suspect intended to use the gun at school. He is due back in court on Dec. 17
