Dwayne Moore: Guilty verdict in Mattapan massacre trial

Dwayne Moore in court Monday.

A 35-year-old man was found guilty today for killing four people in one of the most horrific crimes in recent Boston history.

After three days of deliberations, a jury found Dwayne Moore guilty of four counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery and home invasion. He was acquitted on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault, and illegal gun possession, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

Moore fatally shot four people, including a two-year-old and his mother, during a home invasion and robbery in Mattapan in 2010.

“While nothing can undo the horrific violence that occurred in Mattapan in 2010, it is my hope that today’s ruling will give some comfort to the families of these victims, their friends and our neighbors that justice has been served,” Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. “The fact remains, however, that from Mattapan to Newtown, gun violence is a cancer infecting our society. As mayor, I have seen too many lives ended and forever altered, and we should not have to endure one more senseless tragedy before we have a national policy on guns that takes away the loopholes in the laws and removes automatic weapons from our neighborhoods.”

It was the second trial for Moore after his first trial earlier this year ended with a deadlocked jury.

The verdict was a win for prosecutors who failed to secure a conviction in the first trial earlier this year. In that trial, Moore’s alleged accomplice, Edward Washington, was acquitted and a jury could not come to a decision on Moore’s involvement.

The result of that trial sparked outrage and outbursts from family members who sat through weeks of testimony including graphic details and pictures of how their loved ones died. City officials pleaded for peace after the outcome of the first trial because of tense emotions.

Moore, who faces life without parole, will be sentenced Tuesday morning.
