Menino, survivors of gun violence ‘demand a plan’ in the wake of Newtown shooting

Stephen Barton was shot in the mass shooting at an Aurora movie theater on July 20, 2012, in which 12 people were murdered and 57 others were wounded.

A mayoral coalition that is against illegal guns and is co-chaired by Mayor Thomas M. Menino is standing with victims of gun violence to demand a plan from the federal government that would reduce gun violence in the United States.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which is also co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, released 34 personal videos today that shared the same message: “I demand a plan.”

The videos told stories of Americans whose lives have been scarred by gun violence – including the Aurora and Virginia Tech mass shootings.

“There are too many stories of those who have lost loved ones to gun violence – and far too many were added from Newtown just days ago,” Menino said. “To honor those we’ve lost, we must continue to demand a plan from lawmakers that will keep gun violence from taking more lives.”

The videos will be shown to members of Congress when they meet in Washington D.C. in January in the hope they will pass legislation that reduces gun violence.

They can also be viewed at DemandAPlan.Org. One of the videos is below, and features a survivor of the Aurora shooting in July.
