Olivia Culpo: Boston University student wins Miss Universe pageant (PHOTOS)

Never mind student-athletes, Boston University is producing student-beauty queens.

A Boston University student is Miss Universe 2012.

Olivia Culpo won Wednesday night’s competition at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The live event was viewed by about 1 billion people across the world, organizers said.

The 20-year-old from Rhode Island won the Miss USA title in June just after finishing her sophomore year at BU.

For her final question, Culpo was asked: “What is something you have done that you would never do again?”

“Every experience no matter what it is, good or bad, you will learn from it. That’s just life. But something I’ve done and regretted would probably be picking on my siblings while growing up because you appreciate them so much more as you grow older, you get closer with your family, but everybody fights with their siblings, right? But I don’t regret it,” she said laughing.

Culpo made it to the finals after breezing through the preliminary round, swimsuit competition and evening gown portion.

In a prerecorded interview for the live broadcast that was seen by nearly 1 billion people, according to organizers, Culpo said beauty queens are often thought of as “plastic,” but she considers herself an easy-going person.

“I can take jokes. I can take anything. I’m just a normal person,” she said.

The winner of Miss Universe typically uses the notoriety to advance personal and humanitarian goals. As Miss USA, Culpo has become a spokeswoman for breast cancer awareness.

Shortly after her Miss USA win, Culpo told Metro that she would take a year off from BU to fulfill her responsibilities. Now that she’s Miss Universe it’s unclear what her plans will be.

Brook Lee was the last Miss USA to win Miss Universe in 1997.
