Arson possible cause in West Roxbury auto shop car fires

The damaged cars at Nick's Parkway Auto Repair.

In the 30 years Roy Azar’s family has owned Nick’s Parkway Auto Repair in West Roxbury, he said nothing’s ever happened to the cars parked at his shop.

That changed this morning when police and fire crews were called to the gas station and auto shop on the VFW Parkway at about 12:30 a.m. and found eight cars in flames.

Firefighters put out the fires and now the incident is under investigation by the arson squad, police said.

“To purposely do something like this is crazy,” said Azar during a telephone interview from his shop this morning.

He wondered how or why someone would set the cars on fire because he said the area where the cars were was not visible from the roadway.

The cars did not belong to customers. Rather, the cars were ones that Azar’s business had acquired and were working to repair and sell when they weren’t working on a customer’s car. Azar said the cars that were damaged just needed to be cleaned up and were very close to being marketed.

“We lost all of that money, work and time,” he said. “Time is the most important thing.”

Azar said he was “shocked” when he got the call from a police officer early this morning to let him know about the fires.

He said he is working with insurance to hopefully make up for some of the lost money.

Police are investigating.
