Dropkick Murphys: Ringing you up in style

Matt Kelly, left, and Jeff DaRosa, right, sell copies of their new album, "Signed and Sealed in Blood."

Boston resident Bobby Phillips looked amused as he stepped up to the counter of the Newbury Comics store at Faneuil Hall Marketplace today, probably because the two guys working the register made the music he was about to buy.

“I don’t want to date myself, but I’ve been listening to their music forever,” Phillips said of Dropkick Murphys, a hometown favorite that has been unleashing hard, high energy music since 1996.

Band members split up and hit up Newbury Comics across the state to promote the release of their eighth studio album “Signed and Sealed in Blood.”

Drummer Matt Kelly and Guitarist Jeff DaRosa were the lucky ones who got to work the Boston store today.

“I’ve washed a lot of dishes, but I’ve never done retail before,” said DaRosa. “We’re ringing people up and trying not to screw up.”

Speaking of the band’s new album, Kelly said fans can expect “some friggin’ rock and roll. Just a bunch of jerks playing a bunch of good music.”

DaRosa’s take on the new album: “It’s a lot more fun of an album than the last one, a lot more catchy. We wrote them with the idea of playing them live… By the second chorus, you’re singing along.”

After their stint at Newbury Comics, the band put on a free acoustic set at McGreevy’s Irish Pub – but not after a hard days work slinging CDs.

“We’ll be at the register until they fire us,” said DaRosa. “Or we get caught stealing.”
