Vice President Joe Biden will meet with officials at Girard College to discuss gun safety.

Vice President Joe Biden will hold a roundtable discussion at Girard College today with law enforcement officials and members of Congress on gun safety, according to the White House  website.

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey as well as U.S. Reps. Bob Brady, Chaka Fattah and Allyson Schwartz will attend the event, which started at 11 a.m.

The discussion comes one day before President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address. The Obama administration has expressed a desire to revamp gun-control laws in the wake of the horrific shooting in Decemeber at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Obama has proposed a new ban on assault weapons, magazines carrying more than 10 rounds of ammunition and more elaborate background checks for prospective gun buyers.
