VIDEO: Society Hill woman falls victim to credit card ‘skimming’ scam

Police are looking for two people who allegedly stole a Society Hill woman’s credit card information in a “skimming” scam earlier this month.

Investigators said the victim realized that $1,000 in unauthorized purchases had been made on her card between Feb. 6 and Feb. 8. Police said that, because the compromised card was still in the woman’s possession, they came to the conclusion she was the victim of “skimming” – a scam in which legitimate credit card information is stolen by thieves who transcribe numbers and PINs or install a third-party card-reading device on ATMs and other swiping terminals to capture the information.

It is unknown how the woman’s information was stolen, according to authorities, but two people were caught on camera allegedly using the woman’s account to make purchases at the Game Stop at 505 South Street.

One of those suspects is described as a black male between 40 and 50 years of age with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a red polo shirt, a gray knit ski cap and a dark-colored varsity jacket with leather-look sleeves and the letters “R,” “W,” “D” and “C” stitched in white on the back and an “R” sewn on the coat’s left front.

The second suspect is described as a 20-year-old black female with a thin build. She was last seen wearing a dark-colored three-quarter-length coat, light-colored pants and tan calf-high boots.

No arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information is asked to call 911, to contact the Northwest Detectives Division at 215-686-3353 or 3354, or to submit an anonymous tip by dialing 215-686-TIPS (8477), texting PPD TIP (773847), emailing tips@phillypolice.com or by filling out this online form.
