Police dog accidentially fires gun

crime scene tape

A police dog searching for a gun in a snowbank accidentally shot off a round from the pistol and sent the bullet into a nearby home.

No one was injured during the incident that took place in Lawrence after 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the Eagle-Tribune.

After hearing gunshots, police noticed a car driving away from the scene and attempted to pull it over. During the chase, one of the men inside the car got out and buried something in a nearby snowbank. Police ordered the men out of the car and arrested them.

Officers called in a search dog from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department to assist in locating what the suspect buried. The dog, named Ivan, was pawing through the snowbank when he came into contact with the gun causing it to fire, according to the Eagle-Tribune.

The bullet was sent into a nearby home. Officers woke up the residents of the home and made sure no one was hurt.

The men were arrested and are expected to appear in Lawrence District Court Monday.
