Travelers who regularly bounce between Boston and New York took a hit in the name of safety last month when the federal government shut down the Fung Wah bus company, but starting today a new bus line will take its place, offering “safe and affordable” trips.

Today YO! will start running six daily round trips between New York’s Chinatown neighborhood and Boston South Station.

According to the company, the non-stop service, which launched on Dec. 18 between New York and Philadelphia, offers “on-board amenities such as a guaranteed seat, extra legroom with comfortable leather seating, free Wi-Fi and power outlets.”

Tickets, which run as low as $12 and according to its website as high as $24, are now on sale at www.yobus.com.

YO! is jointly operated by Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus Lines.

“Since we launched YO! last December, we’ve seen a tremendous response from the community and customers, so we’re excited to bring this exceptional service to Boston,” said Dave Leach , president and CEO of Greyhound Lines, Inc. “YO!, which offers a safe and affordable option for travelers who like the convenience and affordability of Chinatown bus lines, is ready to meet the high demand for intercity bus service between Chinatown in New York and Boston.”

And like Fung Wah, YO! has an Asian connection – the bus line’s name is derived from the pronunciation of the Chinese word that means “to protect” and also serves as “an enthusiastic greeting in today’s culture,” according to the company.
