Even a local taxi hailing app is making an argument for later MBTA service.

Hailo Boston today reported a “very noticeable spike” – as much as 300 percent – in requests for cabs between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

“While we have a great service that helps to serve that gap hour, there is also a need for more options than just cab rides,” said Vanessa Kafka, general manager of Hailo Boston. “Having the T stay open an extra hour will better serve the city and make it safer for Boston residents getting home.”

None of the other cities Hailo serves – like Dublin, London, Toronto and Chicago – showed as much of a surge in cab traffic, Kafka said, adding that it’s often a chaotic site on Boston streets come last call.

“It can be anxiety inducing for drivers; people are literally throwing themselves into the streets to stop cabs,” she said.

To help their push, Hailo launched a new social media contest that lets Boston residents weigh in on whether the T should stay open later. Those who make the best arguments while tweeting @HailoBoston with the hashtag #WhyIMindTheGap can win credits toward cab rides.
