A six-alarm fire swept through three triple-decker apartment buildings in Dorchester on Wednesday, leaving dozens of residents homeless.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze, which caused $1.2 million in damage to 10 Fox St., 12 Fox St., and 8 Juliette St. Everyone inside the buildings escaped without injury. One Boston firefighter was treated at Boston Medical Center for a shoulder injury.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the close proximity of the buildings created a “perfect storm” for the fire.

“It was like a firestorm where the fire just swirled around in this very tight, confined space,” MacDonald told the Boston Globe.

Residents tried to contain the fast-moving flames. Vanessa Morana was inside a second-floor apartment on Fox Streeet with Maria Roblova, who saw the fire on the back porch.

“We threw water on it, but it wouldn’t go out,” Morana told the Globe. “Once we realized we couldn’t put it out, we ran out of the building.”

The Red Cross set up a service center for displaced residents at Holland Elementary School. A spokeswoman said 25 adults and two children were provided with hotel rooms, money for food and clothing, and other necessities.
