Officials propose illegal gun carrying crackdown for Philadelphia
State Sen. Larry Farnese (D–Phila.) and State Rep. John Taylor (R–Phila.) will gather Thursday with police officials and prosecutors to announce the introduction of new legislation cracking down on illegal gun ownership in Philadelphia.
Two laws – one introduced in the state Senate and one in the state House of Representatives – will make illegally carrying a gun in Philadelphia a third-degree felony and add a mandatory minimum sentence of at least two years’ jail time for convicted offenders.
Deputy police commissioner Richard Ross and district attorneys Seth Williams, Risa Vetri Ferman and John Whelan – of Philadelphia, Montgomery and Delaware counties, respectively – will be at Philadelphia Police Department headquarters Thursday afternoon to make the announcement.
