Man awaits Delco Krispy Kreme opening by camping outside for two days

Timothy Folkomer was the first person in line when the West Chester Pike Krispy Kreme doughnut shop opened at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, netting him free weekly deliveries of a dozen doughnuts for an entire year.

“I came at 10:30 [a.m.] yesterday,” Folkomer said Monday as he sat outside the store, parked in a lawn chair.

“I taught an adult Bible class at my church in Springfield – Covenant United Methodist Church – and my class said they’ll pray for me tonight if I promise to bring them a dozen doughnuts next week to class. So I told them I would and I stayed here all night.”

But he wasn’t entirely alone – Haverford police officers kept an eye on him.

“This morning one of the Haverford police came and said, ‘We just want you to know you were sound asleep the whole night and we watched you all night,’” he said.

“I thanked them and I told them that there’d be two dozen doughnuts coming to the Haverford police station next week and the policeman said, ‘We have been known never to refuse doughnuts that are delivered to the Haverford police station.’”

The two-day strip mall camping excursion wasn’t Folkomer’s first time — he said he also camped out to be the first customer in line seven years ago when the Springfield Krispy Kreme opened. That location has since shuttered its doors.

Folkomer is generous with his winnings.

“I give most of the Krispy Kreme doughnuts away,” he said. “I know that my friends don’t think that when they look at my belly.”

But he said he’s not too busy counting calories.

“God has put everything on this Earth to enjoy, especially Krispy Kreme glazed raspberry donuts, which are fantastic as far as I’m concerned, in moderation,” he said.
