Jerry Remy ‘upbeat and positive’ after cancer relapse

Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy was treated during spring training for a recurrence of lung cancer, but said he feels “very upbeat and positive about it.”

In an interview broadcast Wednesday night on NESN, Remy said the cancer was found during a CAT scan in January.

“A little thing bubbled up and they thought it was time to do a biopsy on it, and the biopsy came out positive,” Remy said in the interview. “So I was diagnosed again with cancer.”

Last month, the 61-year-old longtime smoker returned to Boston from spring training in Florida to receive radiation treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The cancer was in a different location than Remy’s first lung tumor, which was removed in November 2008.

After that surgery, Remy suffered complications including pneumonia and depression, prompting him to take a four-month leave of absence from the broadcast booth.

Remy said this time, he didn’t experience any side effects.

“Before, the depression was harder than the cancer was,” Remy said. “The timing was a lot of it because I was missing games and that bothered me to a point that I couldn’t go to work to the job that I loved. And I became so depressed that it took me months to get back to work. That’s not the case this time. I feel very positive about things, very upbeat about things. I’ve been down this road before.”

Doctors will perform a follow up CAT scan in three months, and Remy said, “I am not concerned about it.”

“Last time this happened to me, I got so many letters from people who have gone through cancer, who are fighting it at that particular point in time, and I felt like I did them some good. I don’t know, but hopefully I did. For those who have had relapses, now I have too, and hopefully we can get through it together.”

Remy, who has broadcasted Sox games since 1988, recently signed a contract extension with NESN.
