Mayor Thomas Menino is expected to make “a full and complete recovery” after twisting his right ankle and sustaining a spiral fracture of the distal fibula.

According to doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Menino underwent surgery Saturday to repair the fibula.

Doctors described it as a common injury that often requires surgical repair.  The surgery lasted less than one hour and included the placement of a plate and screws to repair the broken bone.

“He tolerated the surgery well and without complication. He is resting comfortably now. He will be in a walking boot and will require the use of crutches for the next couple of months,” Mitchel B. Harris, the hospital’s chief of orthopedic trauma service.

The injury happened after Menino twisted his ankle and fell, fracturing his fibula, a bone of the lower leg.

On Saturday, he had a plate and screws implanted to set his leg.

“He’s very frustrated, but overall he’s trying to make the best out of everything,” Menino Spokeswoman Dot Joyce told The Boston Globe after the injury. “As one of doctors said to me, he’s had some back luck.”

Menino twisted his ankle Friday morning while walking into an event at the Joseph Lee School on Talbot Avenue. He fell to the ground and did not make it into the event.

Menino then went to City Hall and put ice on his leg, but it continued hurting, so he sought treatment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
