Eagles players and students square off in chess tournament
Eagles players Ronnie Cameron and Phillip Hunt joined 230 young chess players from ASAP’s Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge today at Lincoln Financial Field.
The students participated in four rounds of competition and an awards ceremony was held in the Eagles’ locker room.
Arlen Roberts, 14, who is in eighth grade at the Overbrook Educational Center, played Eagles linebacker Hunt. Arlen won.
Arlen said it was fun playing with athletes.
“It was a great experience,” he said. “I wasn’t sure I would win, but I knew it would be a great game.”
Arlen came in first place in his age group.
“Chess helps with my schoolwork,” he said, “since you have to think so much in chess.”Additional reporting by Charles Mostoller.
